About
Bulgaria
The
Republic of Bulgaria, in the eastern Balkans, features a varied
topography – some 70% of which is hills interspersed with
plateaus – and is dominated by the presence of the Balkan,
Rhodope, Pirin and Rila mountain ranges. The climate in the country is
generally temperate and pleasant, although annual average temperatures
do vary with latitude, and altitude. The average annual temperature in
the mountains, for example, is 3 degrees Celsius. Snowfall is frequent
in the winter and occasional in the spring, with snow lying on the
highest mountains until May, or June.

Ski Resorts in Bulgaria
Borovets is the oldest, and
the largest, of the winter resorts in Bulgaria. The resort, itself, is
situated at a height of over 4,000 feet, at the foot of Musala Mountain
– the highest peak in Bulgaria, and the whole of the Balkans
– which reaches a height of over 9,500 feet. Facilities for
children include skiing initiation lessons – of 2 hours
duration – for children between 4 and 8 years, in a safe
area, with guaranteed snow cover. Children aged eight or above
– and, of course, adults – can join the ski school,
which offers half, or whole, day tuition in skiing, or snowboarding,
with special lessons for children. Other, non-skiing, activities
include family sleigh, or snowmobile rides.
Pamporovo is
situated in the southern, Rhodope Mountains, in the shadow
of Snezjanka peak, the highest in the area – at over 6,000
feet – and
the starting point for the major ski runs in the resort. Children over
eight years of age are, again, welcomed at the ski school, and a ski
`kindergarten` caters for those aged between four and seven years. The
local hotels – which are open to non-residents –
are home to a swimming
pool, a bowling alley, and a play area.

The
old town of Bansko,
surrounded by the Pirin, Rila and Rhodope
mountains, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, but this has not stopped
huge inward investment from turning Bansko into a modern winter sports
resort. Children are well catered for in Bansko, with a junior ski club
– with tuition, and equipment – for the four to
seven year olds, and a
non-skiing nursery for younger visitors. There is also a craft centre,
a bowling alley, and an ice rink. Holiday
homes in Bansko
self-catering apartments, and so-called `catered` chalets, for example
– are very much in demand.
